Classical Guitar Events

This Saturday is the Guitar Circle's last Featured Artist recital of the year, come to hear the wonderful Martha Masters and reconnect with your fellow members and music lovers.

Plenty more going on this week beginning with two free concerts of guitar ensembles and solos, by the LA City College guitar program on Wednesday, and Gregg Goodhart's terrific Servite HS program in Anaheim on Thursday. On Friday Kate Lewis' LA Valley College guitar ensemble will play in Valley Glen, and on Saturday in San Bernardino we have one last chance to hear Rodrigo's "Concerto de Aranjuez" when David Cahueque appears with the SB Symphony Orchestra. Then on Sunday evening in Buena Park, the recently formed Orange County Guitar Orchestra under the direction of David Grimes offers its first public performance.

Classical Guitar Events

We have two free events this week, Michael Nigro offers a noontime recital on Wednesday at the Pasadena Presbyterian Church and Richard Dawson appears at the Santa Monica Public Library on Saturday afternoon. That evening Eva Beneke will perform her transcription of Bach's second violin partita with vocalists (including the famous Chaconne). It's in a small venue in Brentwood but you can try for tickets, I heard her last weekend in her final DMA recital at USC in a performance that was very beautiful and highly enlightening. Also on Saturday evening we have another opportunity to hear Rodrigo's Concerto de Aranjuez, this one in Oxnard with Carlos Gonzales and the Ventura College Symphony Orchestra.

Our week begins with two free events, a Thursday noontime solo and ensemble concert by the LA City College guitar program and a Friday afternoon recital by Cameron O'Connor at USC, which are followed on Friday evening with the Cal State Northridge guitar program offering its own ensemble and solo concert. And on Friday and Saturday El Camino College presents its third annual Guitar Festival offering master classes, workshops and concerts, all free except for Martha Masters' Friday evening recital.

Busy week...on Wednesday the Levante Duo appear free at the Ventura Classical Guitar Society meeting in Camarillo, and the brilliant Eliot Fisk performs with clarinetist Richard Stoltzman in the Da Camera Society's concert series in LA. On Thursday Pepe Romero plays Rodrigo's Concerto de Aranjuez with the LA Philharmonic in Disney Hall, then again on Friday morning and on Sunday afternoon. He'll perform the same program on Saturday evening at the Segerstrom Center in Costa Mesa, if tickets are still available you can get a 10% discount by using the promo code GUITAR10. On Saturday Cal State Northridge will offer their Guitar Studio Recital at midday, and that evening the legendary flamenco artist Paco de Lucia appears in recital at Disney Hall (this event may be sold out, but it's always worth checking for availability). Also on Saturday evening the eclectic trio The Line Forms Hear will perform at the meeting of the Long Beach Classical Guitar Society, and on Sunday afte rnoon we're offered another performance of the Concerto de Aranjuez, this one by Jack Sanders with the Claremont Symphony in a free concert in Claremont.

Our last members' Showcase Recital of the season will be this Saturday at Chapman, come hear you fellow members perform and make sure your membership is up-to-date. And put May 19th on your calendar for our next Featured Artist Recital with the wonderful Martha Masters.

Several other events this week, beginning with the guitar faculty of LA Valley College who offer a free lunchtime recital on Wednesday, and that evening Peter Yates (guitar & arpeggione) and Nadia Shpachenko (piano) perform at Cal Poly Pomona (so what exactly is an arpeggione...?). Then on Sunday afternoon the Falla Guitar Trio (which includes the brilliant Adam del Monte) perform in Boyle Heights as part of the Da Camera Society's Chamber Music in Historic Sites series.

I'm running late this week, there are three events left on this week's schedule, the first today (Tuesday) with Cameron O'Connor and Michael Matsumo appearing in a free noontime flute/guitar recital at LA City College. On Wednesday evening Ricardo Escobar offers his free doctoral recital with friends at USC (with a rare opportunity to hear Bill Kanengiser sing!), and on Saturday afternoon the stellar students in the USC Thornton classical guitar department appear in recital, it's also free but reservations are required.

On Wednesday Isamu Nakashio offers a midday performance at the Pasadena Presbyterian Church, also free, and on Friday evening the eclectic guitar trio Line Forms Hear will play at Cal Poly Pomona.

This week's schedule begins on Wednesday with two free events, our esteemed ex-Prez Lee Zimmer offering a midday recital at Cypress College, and young Giacomo Fiore appearing in Camarillo that evening for the Ventura Classical Guitar Society. Also on Wednesday evening the USC Thornton Guitar Orchestra with Bill Kanengiser and Shingo Fujii perform at SOKA University in Aliso Viejo. On Thursday you can enjoy an unusal offering of orchestra, voice and guitar with Vanessa Paloma and Jordan Charnofsky appearing with the LA Jewish Symphony Orchestra at the University of LaVerne, repeated on Saturday in Encino. Also on Saturday the multitalented David Rogers will perform at the meeting of the Long Beach Classical Guitar Society, and our week ends on Sunday afternoon with a free recital in Laguna Beach by the lovely AlmaNova flute/guitar duo.

Classical Guitar Events

This Thursday at noon the guitarist/composer Shingo Fujii offers a free Master Class and lecture at USC as part of his month-long US visit. Then we've got a festival-mania weekend, with the 8th Annual LMU Guitar Festival at Loyola Marymount from Friday to Sunday, the NACUSA-LA Guitarathon in Culver City on Saturday and Pasadena on Sunday, and the Los Angeles International Flamenco Festival in Redondo Beach on Saturday & Sunday.

On a sadder note, many of you already know of the passing of Richard Glenn in December. Richard was a wonderful performer, a gifted teacher and composer, and an important figure for many years in the world of classical guitar and baroque music in southern California. He was a long-time member of the Orange County Guitar Circle, having serving as its President and, for many years, as the director of its Showcase Recital series. He was my own classical guitar teacher and close friend, he will be sorely missed by me and by many others. There's a link on the OCGC web site to the program for the Celebration of Life which was held in Irvine earlier this month, and to his obituary which appeared in the OC Register.

Another month has gone by (!) and the Orange County Guitar Circle meets again this Saturday at Chapman. It's a Showcase Recital, an opportunity for you to come hear your talented fellow members perform. The program's full, but there's still time for you to reserve a slot to play in the last Showcase of the year on April 21st.

There are two other events on this week's schedule, the students in Cal State Fullerton's wonderful classical guitar program are offering a free recital on Friday evening, and the young star Jeremy Collins appears Saturday evening at the Fret House in Covina.

A nice week coming up, beginning on Tuesday evening with Paul Galbraith's appearance at Soka University in Aliso Viejo - as I said last week, if you haven't had a chance to hear hear this amazing musician before now, don't miss this opportunity. At noon on Thursday, Andrew York, a founding member of the LA Guitar Quartet, offers a Master Class and lecture at USC, free to auditors, and on Friday Peter Yates leads his Cal Poly Pomona Guitar Ensemble in recital. Then on Saturday evening the prize-winning USC graduate Colin Davin performs at LA City College in Valley Glen.
